I have shared a traditional method of making masala dal vadas in the blog earlier, but I have been trying out some short cuts too as some times we are not upto doing such snacks as the thought of soaking , grinding  deters us, besides we cannot have these vadas immediately.
Hence the quick method.

Just take out a small ladle of the mix ( from dal vada mix pre made ), add water, chopped onions, cabbage curry leaves, make a little tight batter,, heat oil, flatten a small ball of batter mix, shaped into vadas, deep fry …ready to go with your tea all under 10 minutes.

Recipe My home made mix for masala dal vadas…


( for the mix only )

1 cup chana dal
1/4 cup besan ( gram flour)
2 -3 tbsp rice flour
some roasted curry leaves( or can be added fresh at the time of making vadas)
1 tsp fennel
1 tsp ginger powder
1-2 tsp chilli flakes or more if you like spicy.


Coarsely powder the chana dal, mix it with besan flour, rice flour and other ingredients, store in a clean air tight container.

To prepare masala dal  vadas


chopped onions, cabbage, curry leaves.
freshly grated ginger
oil to deep fry
Very little water to make batter.

When ever you want to make instant vadas, just measure out the quantity of the vada mix  as needed, add water and make batter as explained above..Add chopped ginger, onions, cabbage or any grated vegetable and make vadas.
The traditional way is to soak chana dal, some rice, toor dal , for 2- 3 hours with red chillies, curry leaves, ginger and fennel, grind to batter and make vadas.
The instant dal vada mix made saves time and useful for making quick snacks for guests too.
