Upma Kozhakkatai | Pidi Kozhakkatai | Steamed savory rice balls
Delicious filling healthy steamed rice balls called upma kozhakkatai | Pidi Kozhakkatai made in many ways. here i have used the quick version by using idli rava which makes the process faster and ideal for breakfast or dinner . this delicious traditional south Indian tiffin can be served with many kinds of chutneys, gothsu, sambar, coconut chutney or khara chutney . Vathakuzhambu also makes a tasty side dish for upma kozhakkatai . There are many ways to prepare this dish, i have just simplified the method using idli rice rava which is available in stores in perfect texture .

  1. keep the idli rice rava and chana dal soaked separately in water from 15 to 30 minutes .
  2. heat a heavy bottomed pan , add oil , add split udad dal, mustard seedes, green chillies and curry leaves one by one after the dals have turned golden and mustard spluttered .
  3. add 2.5 cups water, salt , asafoetida powder , and grated coconut .
  4. allow the water to boil well, then add the soaked idli rice rav, after draining water, ad the soaked chana dal , mix well, reduce flame , cover and cook tioll water is absorbed by the rice rava completely .
  5. check in occasionally , stir. and keep covered after the water is completely absorbed and upma is cooked . cover and keep , for 10 minutes till mixture cools down well .,
  6. when the mixture has cooled, you will see the upma mixture non sticky , make small oval shaped balls and place in a container to be steam cooked .
  7. steam the upma kozhakkatai till it appears shiny and non sticky . allow to cool and serve with chutneys, sambar , gothsu . Vatha kuzhambu , puli milagai also make excellent side dish for upma kozhakkatai .
