There are so many ways to cook raw plantains , but we prefer this podimas , which is nothing but grated raw plantains spiced mildly with minimal ingredients . The raw plantains may be pressure coked or in a pan , i prefer the open cooking as the plantains need to be removed from hot water as soon as they seem tender and firm .

Once cooled, they peel very easily and can be grated fine. We love it with rasam and rice .I also like to have it mixed with rice and eat it like a podimas rice .

Vazhakkai Podimas | Raw Banana curry
A delicious way to enjoy raw banana by steam cooking or boiling till tender, grating and using very minimal ingredients to give a delicious curry . This is called vazhakkai podimas in Tamil .

Instructions
  1. Boil the raw plantains in water with a pinch of salt till cooked tender and firm , should not turn mushy or over cooked .
  2. when cooled, peel the boiled plantains and keep aside .
  3. grate the peeled raw plantains ,
  4. meanwhile coarsely grind the coconut with green chillies .
  5. heat a pan , add coconut oil , add mustard seeds, split udad dal, curry leaves , add the grated raw bananas, and mix well .
  6. adjust salt if needed, add a pinch of asafoetida powder , lastly add the ground coconut chilly mixture .
  7. add few drops of lime juice .
  8. serve with rasam and rice .
