Avani Avittam Recipes: 49 Traditional South Indian Festival Dishes (Free PDF)
About Avani Avittam
Avani Avittam (also known as Upakarma) falls on August 27th, 2026 this year. It’s the annual festival where Brahmins change their sacred thread — but it’s more than just a ritual. It’s a day of reflection and renewal, a chance to acknowledge where we’ve fallen short of our duties and to recommit to them with a fresh start.
The day holds special significance for the Seven Rishis, and every Brahmin family traces their lineage back to one of the Gothras. Changing the sacred thread on this day is seen as a symbolic opening of wisdom — a reminder to walk with humility and purpose in the year ahead.

Avani Avittam is one of those festivals that always takes me back to my amma's kitchen. The thread ceremony, the banana leaf laid out just so, and a spread that took the whole morning to put together — payasam simmering on one burner, vadai frying on the other, everyone pitching in. Mostly it was me 😅Amma’s little helper .
This year, I wanted to put all of it together in one place — so I made a free recipe collection with 49 traditional Avani Avittam recipes, from the everyday kootus and poriyals to the sweets that make the day feel special: paal payasam, sakkarai pongal, poli, and more.
What's Inside
- Traditional kootus, kuzhambu, and rasam varieties
- Vadai and other festival snacks
- Sweets — payasam, kesari, poli
- Rice and accompaniments for the full spread
Everything is written the way I actually cook it at home — simple steps, no unnecessary fuss.
