Kerala Parippu Curry | Paruppu Curry
Paruppu Curry or Paruppu Curry is one of the first dishes served with rice in a traditional Kerala Onam Sadya. Made with dal and coconut, it is simple, mild, and comforting, especially when mixed with hot rice and a little ghee. Though it may look like one of the simplest dishes on the banana leaf, Paruppu Curry is an essential part of the Sadya and sets the meal off beautifully.
Ingredients:
1 cup moong dal
½ cup grated coconut
½ tsp cumin
3 shallots, 2–3 green chilies
¼ tsp turmeric
2 tsp ghee/coconut oil
¼ tsp mustard seeds
2 dried red chilies, broken
Curry leaves, salt & water as needed
Method:
Pressure-cook moong dal with water and salt; mash well.
Grind coconut, green chilies, cumin and turmeric into a paste.
Mix paste into dal, adjust water/salt, boil briefly and remove from heat.
Heat ghee/oil; splutter mustard seeds, then sauté shallots, curry leaves and dried chilies until golden.
Pour tempering over dal. Serve hot with rice and pappad; drizzle with ghee.
